This study took a qualitative approach that focused on the psycho-social copying strategies of a 3 tier shift work in the manufacturing industry. The goal is to explore the day-to-day psycho-social experiences and copying strategies of employees in the manufacturing industry.
A qualitative research method enabled an in-depth understanding into the employee’s subjective understandings and experiences. The researcher also sought sufficient weight of description and maximum coverage into the phenomenon in question (Holliday, 2002). According to Terre Blanche, Durrheim and Painter (2006), the qualitative approach is appropriate if the reality to be studied is that of people’s subjective experiences. This, they say, leads to a subjective relationship between the researcher and the participant.
