I believe that the first step in achieving cultural competence in healthcare is to involve the patient, regardless of their culture, into their own healthcare. Secondly, if the patient does not speak English, an interpreter should be provided; if an interpreter is not available, the patient should be able to have a friend or family member translate if someone is with themTwo other methods that I have seen at my particular clinical site is having an interpreter available on site or by phone, and also, having translated pamphlets explaining the health disorder to the patient in their primary language if available. Finally, in the clinical setting a worker should not assume or position the patient into a stereotypical category. Each patient should be accepted and understood from their own individual standpoint.
